Mask Beginnings

I'm working on a new piece, a fiber and embroidery mask based on the Medusa myth. It's super work intensive and I haven't used fabric like this before, so it will be an interesting adventure. The first thing I had to do was to sculpt a face to drape the fabric on - I will tailor the pieces and use a stiffener so that it actually conforms to this (somewhat terrifying) facial expression when it's done. Here are some shots of the sculpting progress - I started with a styrofoam head to save myself some clay volume.

Here's the finished base form, shellacked for protection, with the first fabric panel pinned in place. I may have overdone the level of detail, but it was fun. I love figure sculpture and I miss it!
